Conservative Care for Common Foot and Ankle Pain
Foot and ankle pain can come from a variety of structural, inflammatory, or overuse-related conditions, and most don't require surgery to find relief. At Valley Podiatry and Wound Care Center, we treat a wide range of foot and ankle pain conditions using conservative, evidence-based approaches designed to reduce pain, restore function, and prevent the issue from progressing further.
Dr. Samuel Enyew takes the time to identify the specific cause of your discomfort, whether it's a structural issue like flat feet, a deformity like a bunion or hammer toe, or inflammation affecting a joint or tendon, so your treatment plan addresses the actual source of the problem.

What to Expect During Your Evaluation
Your visit starts with a discussion of your symptoms, including when the pain began, what activities make it worse, and any footwear or lifestyle factors that may be contributing. Dr. Enyew then examines the foot and ankle for alignment, swelling, range of motion, and points of tenderness, and may order a digital X-ray to assess joint space, bone alignment, or signs of arthritis.
This evaluation helps determine which condition is causing your pain and whether conservative treatment alone is likely to be effective, or whether further monitoring is needed over time.
Conditions We Treat
Flat Foot
Flat foot occurs when the arch of the foot collapses, either from birth or developing over time due to tendon weakness, injury, or aging. This can lead to pain in the arch, heel, or ankle, and may affect overall gait and posture.
- Custom orthotics to support the arch and improve alignment
- Supportive footwear recommendations
- Physical therapy to strengthen supporting muscles and tendons
- Bracing for more significant cases
Bunions
- Padding and toe spacers to reduce friction and pressure
- Custom orthotics to correct alignment and slow progression
- Wider, supportive footwear recommendations
- Anti-inflammatory treatment for flare-ups
Hammer Toe
Hammer toe develops when one or more of the smaller toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, often due to muscle imbalance, tight footwear, or underlying conditions like arthritis. Left untreated, the toe can become rigid and more difficult to correct conservatively.
- Toe splints or padding to reduce pressure
- Custom orthotics to correct underlying mechanical issues
- Footwear adjustments with a wider, deeper toe box
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
Arthritis
Arthritis in the foot and ankle causes joint inflammation that can lead to stiffness, swelling, and pain, particularly with weight-bearing activity. While arthritis is a chronic condition, conservative treatment can significantly reduce symptoms and slow progression.
- Anti-inflammatory medication and corticosteroid injections
- Custom orthotics to reduce joint stress
- Bracing to support affected joints
- Physical therapy to maintain mobility and strength
Achilles Tendon Problems
- Stretching and physical therapy
- Activity modification to reduce strain
- Custom orthotics or heel lifts to reduce tendon tension
- Anti-inflammatory treatment for active flare-ups
Peroneal Tendon Strain
The peroneal tendons run along the outside of the ankle and can become strained or inflamed from overuse, ankle instability, or repetitive activity. This often presents as pain and swelling along the outer ankle that worsens with activity.
- Bracing or taping to stabilize the ankle
- Physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles
- Activity modification during the healing period
- Anti-inflammatory treatment to reduce swelling
When to Schedule a Foot & Ankle Evaluation
Many foot and ankle pain conditions develop gradually, but certain signs mean it's time for an evaluation by a podiatric doctor rather than waiting to see if it improves on its own.
- Pain that persists for more than two to three weeks
- Visible swelling, deformity, or changes in foot shape
- Pain that worsens with activity or weight-bearing
- Difficulty finding comfortable, properly fitting footwear
- Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the foot or ankle
